The name Blue Lotus can be applied to several members of the Nymphaeaceae family. The specific/scientific name for our Blue lotus is Nymphaea caerulea. Blue lotus is an herbaceous flower that is native to Northern Africa. Blue lotus thrives in still waters and was once abundant in the Nile Delta. The flower is commonly depicted in Egyptian art and is part of the Egyptian story of creation; the story goes that out of the pitch-black waters of the Nile rose the blue lotus flower and brought light into the world.
The Egyptian people used blue lotus as a stimulant, relaxant, aphrodisiac and a remedy against general illness. The flowers possess a euphoric scent, that is said to be induce feelings of heighted awareness.
